No one can miss the fact that Halloween is about to come upon us in a week’s time. Everywhere you go, you see ghouls and witches and just plain ugliness glorified. Even NTUC has a ghoul at its entrance 🙁
And today’s Sunday Times tell us why businesses are jumping onto the Halloween bandwagon – MONEY!!! 🙁 And while I can understand why businesses are doing it, I cannot understand why Singaporean parents are allowing their children to participate in it. If it’s a dress up party you are looking for, then create one of your own and invite your children’s friends over and have a blast. Why only do it on Halloween?
As the older generation would say, this is an ang mo tradition, ie a Western tradition, not Asian. We have our own Hungry Ghost Festival which lasts one full month, thank you very much 😀
But that’s not my point. My point is (whether it is ang mo or not) : why would one invite such dark spiritual forces into their lives and into their children’s lives? Look up the history of Halloween and you will know it isn’t just a fun thing.
Be careful what you invite into your home and your lives, my friends.
i agree!
i’m writing from canada and over here EVERYBODY celebrates halloween…even the most Christian families. many churches here organise “alternative” parties but i don’t see the point of having an alternative when we shouldn’t even be celebrating halloween in the first place!
Thanks for writing this post, Serene. 😀 I agree with you too and your post really put my thoughts into words why we should not celebrate Halloween, all the more because we are Christians. I often read my sis-in-law’s fren’s blog about her days with 3 young children and I was not too sure if this Christian household should be celebrating Halloween even though it seems like they are doing it in the name of fun. My husband assured me that we do not have to do like what others are doing and so yup, no halloween celebration for us too. 😀
