It is JUNE!
Wherever you are, if you are using the Gregorian calendar, June marks the end of the first half of the year.
So…how has it been?
Do a Mid-Year Review
This is a great time to do a mid-year review and do a stocktake of what’s happened so far. Moving ahead, I am sure most of us need to tweak things to get to the end of the year triumphant. Hopefully, you are not giving up on the year. Although some days that’s what I feel like doing.
And hopefully, we have not all forgotten what we had set out to do at the beginning of the year.
Whether you are busy or are feeling too dreary to do anything, may I encourage you to stop and recalibrate before rushing through the next half of the year?
A Mid-Year Review is Akin to a Stock Take
When you run a shop, you have to do at least one big annual stock take. Ideally, you should take regular stock takes along the year, not just wait for the once a year check on stocks.
This helps you decide if you need to order more or less of an item, look for other items that your customers are looking for. Replace items that have been discontinued. Or even if you should continue the business you are in.
And this is what we should be doing with our lives too. Most of us do a stocktake at the end of the year by reviewing what has gone right and what has not. And then we set up grand goals for the new year, right? That is a good thing to do.
But it is really better to do regular reviews rather than to wait for the end of the year to do one big review.
Just as a shop owner ought to do regular stock checks if he does not want to end up with a whole lot of unsold goods, we should be doing regular reviews if we do not wish to find ourselves with a lot of unfulfilled goals, especially if they are from the Lord.
Pray
As the mid-year hits, do spend some time in prayer to ask the Lord to show you what you need to be shown and what you may need to address, or recalibrate. Ask Him if there is anything you have forgotten or forsaken in the busyness of life.
Then answer the following questions truthfully.
Mid-Year Review Questions to Start With
- What were the goals I set up at the beginning of the year?
- Do they still matter? Or do I need new goals?
- Why do my goals matter? [knowing your WHY is important]
- Are my plans to achieve them working out?
- If they are not, how can they be tweaked to work better? [Eliminate? Simplify? Seek help?]
- Do I need new systems and routines?
- For homeschooling moms: is the curriculum working for my child and for me?
- If it isn’t, why? How am I going to move forward from here?
- Is there something I need to say “no” to so that I can move forward to fulfil my assignment from the Lord? Are you suffering from FOMO?
- Is there something God has been telling me to do but I have been ignoring Him? Is God asking you to do something that you’ve been ignoring?

Be Realistic
As you peruse these questions, be realistic. We all start out a new year with new hopes and great intentions. But then life hits us. Reality sets in. It is easy to just let everything go and give up.
Instead of giving up, and feeling awful, take a step back and go back to God:
Were those lofty goals we set at the start of the year from God? Or were they set out of fear? (or ambition even?)
Goals From God?
Because if it is something the Lord has asked you to do, then you must make sure you fulfil it. Because He is faithful to do His part, we must be faithful to do our part. Ask for Holy Spirit empowerment. God’s assignments are to be done His way, ask for wisdom to know how to make everything work. And yes, adjustments may have to be made and that is always uncomfortable.
Goals From Fear?
Are you doing something out of fear or due to peer pressure? When we make out decisions based on either scenario, it never ends well. Instead, we often end up more tired and more derailed from God’s plan. Be honest when you ask yourself this question.
Do a Mid-Year Review
Friends now is a great time to do a mid-year review and check your alignment. Get rid of whatever is not helping you fulfil your assignment in the Lord. Instead, set up what you need to set up to help you fulfil.

Say “Yes” Lord!”
Dear Serene,
Thank you for reminding us to perform a regular stocktake in our lives, and to pray over our goals.
Happy June holidays to you too. May you have a good rest and a prayerful stocktaking exercise during this time.
Warm regards,
Michele
