Hmmm…I just read off the AsiaParents list that someone is very worried coz his 14mth old is not able to tell his colours apart! And that the child is more interested in playing!
Wow! I would have thought that if I had a child who was interested in colours, shapes it was a bonus. And if he couldn’t get his colours right, I would just let it be. Afterall, sooner or later he would get it π To get worried about it?
But I guess in this fast-paced society, everyone is pushing for the next higher level, to shine. Well, everyone except me, I guess?! So if you are reading this blog for the first time, just take note that we are not your high achievers here. So don’t come here expecting me to dish out academic tips. I’d probably be the one asking for academic tips! Lol!
I am all for following your child’s lead in academics. If he is interested in letters, go for it, let him be an early reader. If she is interested in plants, expose her to all sorts of flora and fauna and let her be a botanist.
But to get worried that a 14 mth old cannot tell his colours apart??? And to be worried that the child prefers to play??? Wow!
I am really struck speechless.
But then, like I said, I am probably in the minority. I know many parents who have started flashing cards at their newborn babies. Me? Remembering which side he nursed last is difficult enough. π
This person would probably have gone into cardiac arrest if he knows that my 19mth old says “woof” to every animal you show her.
Me : What does a horse say?
Toddler : Woof
Me : And what does a cat say?
Toddler : Woof
Isn’t it hilarious? Well, I think so π And she barely says all of 6 – 7 words clearly. One of which is “bao bao” – that is Chinese for bread. And “yum” to every food item you show her.
But she understands fine and she’s healthy, happy, obedient (generally)Β and one of the most affectionate toddlers I have had.
Different priorities, different values.
I’m like you Serene π
I can’t be bothered if they don’t know colours even now at 21 months. My little Kenan is busy picking up social skills (like saying hello and bye bye to all the cleaners in our estate) and he’s especially a loving little boy who can’t keep still.
He’s becoming more vocal, though. Favourite words are “Mine!!”, “Give me” and “Daddy, where you?”
He’s loved to bits by his siblings π
