Since the beginning of the year, I have been trying to get the family on a eat-more-vegetables-and-fruit mission. But I must say it has been awfully hard! And each time I try and fail I realise to my dismay that it is a matter of old habits refusing to die! 🙁

Those of you who love your veg and fruits would probably think – what’s the big deal?! But it is a big deal for someone who, out of convenience in the beginning and now, out of habit, eats only vegetables during dinner.

So 1st of all, my menu plan has to have vegetables on it, preferably the exact type of vegetable, otherwise it would be so easy for me to ignore it 🙁

Next my grocery list and shopping must also change accordingly. I now make a special trip to the wet market to pick and choose our vegetables and fruits since the NTUC near us has a limited range of offerings.

Even our fridge organisation had to change! I needed to make space in the fridge for the vegetables! And I needed to list out the types of vegetables we have on the fridge door so I won’t be wasting money by forgetting about them – which infortunately I have a bad habit of doing 🙁 But no matter how I tried, there’s just not enough space in the fridge to accommodate the much larger amount of vegetables I buy now. So we actually bought a 2nd fridge. Just slightly over 300 litres.

But despite all these changes, old habits are still very hard to kill off. And I realised that I must make a very conscious effort to cook and eat healthily ie force myself to do so 🙁

Can’t help but think the same of my spiritual walk – if I don’t force myself to read the Bible, spend time with God, I will backslide into my old habit of ignoring God till I need His help. 🙁

It also makes me realise that as parents, we need to instill good and healthy physical and spiritual habits in our children when they are young. Or they will develop poor habits and it will dog them for life as they struggle to conquer them as an adult.

  1. re: buying n storing veggies.

i’ve had problems buying n storing veggies tt will last the week till i planned my veggies in this order: soft green veggie, ie spinach, cai xin, broccoli, cabbage, beans ie french beans/long beans, finally, root veggies ie pumpkin/carrot. by then we’d have reached the end of the week and can start another round. : )

cabbage can last till end of the week also. if it’s no longer green, just make soup or stew it a la chap chye.

i also stock up on frozen mixed veggies n frozen peas, just throw a large handful into whatever you’re making whether it’s a stir fry or a noodle dish or pasta sauce, when short on time – good for quickie lunch dishes.

    hth!

    • Oh I don’t have a problem keeping the veggies fresh. It is a SPACE issue that I had. I keep my veggies in the Tupperware or Lock ‘n’ Lock veggie keepers. Can last a week and still fresh. Worth investing.

  2. Serene,

How do you storen the leavy veg in them? Do you wash and cut them up so that they can fit?

    • Jen – noooo! Once you cut, you start losing the nutrients! I would gently bend them to fit. Besides, I always buy the largest container available so usually no need to squash so badly.

  3. Thanks Serene! I usually do what Ee lin does and usually have frozen veg and also cabbage (last at least 2 weeks in the fridge) for emergency!

Will go look for those containers.

i wanted to buy those lock n lock containers but my mum said not to, kills a lot of space in the fridge. she was so adamant i dropped the idea. now i wonder. i guess my mum doesn’t see the need cos she’s free enough to buy fresh veggies every other day. but for us who shop once a week it’s impt to keep veggies fresh for as long as possible.

but if/when i do get those containers i really must do fridge decluttering n reorganisation to optimise space. need to reclaim space – i’m sure there’re things i need to throw out!

    • Yep! I have a post on fridge organisation at my other blog. Have to re-think how one organises it to fit the boxes in. If one goes to the market daily or even 3x/week then can afford not to have these bulky boxes.
