Sometime back in September 2014, Esther, then 11 years old, asked to learn how to knit. Since I have no idea how to do so, I asked her to go check out YouTube tutorials and within a few weeks, she had mastered it and was even teaching her siblings how to do it!
Then she went on to google how to crochet and she also learnt how to do it via YouTube tutorials! She then got the younger girls interested and soon she became the go-to person to go for help when they are stuck and it constantly amazes me that she could at a glance tell them what they did wrong.
So post PSLE, when I saw a friend from Toa Payoh Methodist Church posting about Project Knit 2015, I immediately contacted her and asked if Esther could be involved. Project Knit 2015 is a project organized by Toa Payoh Methodist Church for the Shan people of Thailand whom they support. Volunteers were to knit adult and child length scarves to bless the Shan people who had to endure a very cold end-of-the-year season. You can check out their Facebook page for photos of the lovely scarves knitted by the group. Patterns, needles, yarn and even labels were provided by the church. It was a well thought out project indeed.
Although the project is called Project Knit, those who preferred to crochet were not turned away, which was good news to Ruth who prefers to crochet than knit. So she could get involved too!
In the end, Esther contributed 5 scarves and Ruth, 3 scarves, in just 2 weeks. So proud of these 2! I am glad that we homeschool as it gave the the children the time to dabble in projects that they are interested in. And all without any input from me!
