Day 15 of #Write28Days Challenge
Let’s talk about setting up systems for homeschooling and home. Just as routines are helpful to get everyone moving in the same direction, systems are helpful to get everyone doing things systematically so that we don’t end up doing unnecessary work or we miss out what needs to be done.
Setting Up Systems for Homeschooling and Home
Over the next few days, I will be writing about setting up systems for our home, like meal planning, laundry management, housekeeping, and more. I will also cover setting up systems for our homeschool, which includes homeschool planning.
Some posts will be longer than others but I want to break them down into individual components so that it is clearer and you get to skip over days you don’t need help on.
What are Systems and Why Do We Need Them?
I am defining system here as a way of doing things that will reduce our workload by outlining what needs to be done at every step. This allows anyone to be able to take over our tasks if and when the need arises. It will also teach our children how to run their homes in the future.
As stay-at-home-mothers, we are in charge of everything in the home. Being needed 24/7 because you are the only one who knows how things work in the house and where things are kept in the house is not only unsustainable but unhealthy in the long run. It may fuel your need to feel needed but this is not helpful for you or for everyone else.
What happens if you fall too sick to work? What happens if you need to be called away for some family emergency?
Work Ourselves Out of a Job
We usually don’t think of this until some crisis happens. The current COVID-19 pandemic is making me think even harder how to work myself out of a job and setting up systems for home and homeschool is one way I can ensure it.
Once you have set up systems in your homeschool and home, you will need to train, train, and train your older children to step up. Documenting how you do certain things around the house is helpful too. You can do it in the written form or video yourself doing it.
Things Fall Apart – Not!
Our homes should not fall apart if we are not home. Yes, chores may not be done the way we do it (actually, I guarantee that they wouldn’t be done the way we do it), but they are done. That is worth a celebration.
We need to train our children to be able to run their own households when the time comes. Setting up systems for home and homeschooling is one way we can empower them. Once they learn our system, they can go about to adapt it to their own household in time to come.
How Many Systems Do You Need?
Again, keep things simple. I believe meals, laundry, housekeeping and homeschooling are the basic systems a homeschooling family needs. If you have the bandwidth to add more, go ahead! More power to you!
Tomorrow, we will discuss the system of meal planning. See you!
I love having systems. I can’t always get my husband to get on board with them like I could my kids. 🙂
Husbands….ahhhh. That’s all 🙂
