Yes, something’s gotta give. One can’t just keep on adding the things one needs to do without giving up some other stuff. In the same way, one cannot hope to be a fulltime mother and career woman without something being sacrificed. Be it sleep (sleep less), money (to farm out certain responsibilities) or time to oneself (less/no more manicure/facial?!) And if you are a SAHM, you can’t hope to maintain a 2-income lifestyle.
To hope that one can just maintain one’s lifestyle when one has a family to tend to will just stress you out. To assume that one can keep to the status quo as the family grows from one to two and perhaps 3 children is idealistic and naive. Everytime something is added, dynamics change. We have to adapt.
Let us not be foolish and cause ourselves more stress by insisting on doing things we used to do when things are simply not the way they used to be.
And one more thing – stop putting yourself on a Guilt Trip when you have to adjust to a new situation. If it really causes you distress, then change it. As Maya Angelou says,
“If you don’t like something, change it.
If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”
