Do you know about the IT bags? The must have bags that scream “I am so with it!” from a mile away? The kind that costs tens of thousands of dollars – no matter what currency you are using?  Well, obviously I don’t own one 🙂

But I was thinking – would I own one if money is not an issue? Almost immediately I said to myself, “Nah!” 🙂 I can’t even bring myself to even think that I would, if I could. Probably coz I have been brought up by a very frugal mom.

This issue has been on my mind since I read that someone on a parenting list not only owns a 4-digit figure bag but several of them! To me, a bag is a bag is a bag. Sure there are nice bags and what we in Singapore call, aunty bags (dowdy and sometimes even garish ones 🙂 ) Butone definitely does not need to spend thousands to get a decent looking one.

I guess it is really no big deal to someone who draws a 5-figure pay each month. But I can’t help but think – what a waste of money! 🙁 Even if that person has contributed to the poor, the widows and the orphans. I can’t help but think – How does owning such a status symbol enrich one’s spiritual life? Does it in fact hinders one’s spiritual life?

Well, all I know is that even if I could, I won’t. How about you? 🙂

  1. I can’t be bothered lor. Maybe if I’m in an IT job, and I earn lots and I just feel like boosting my self-esteem with an IT bag, then I would. But other than that, don’t see the point. I only chauffeur/maid, right?

  2. i agree with you. i cannot appreciate those ‘IT’ bags. what’s so nice abt the monograms? they look just plain boring to me. i always feel like i am on a different planet whenever my colleagues around me start cooing excitedly abt the latest in-season designs. honestly, it think the money can be better spent elsewhere.

i am at peace being blissfully ignorant… (not forgetting my husband is also thankful that i am!)

  3. I will be frank and admit that not too long ago i used to covet such ‘IT’ bags. I mean- Hermes, LV, Gucci…Drool!i even have subscribed to the rent-a-bag site so that i have the option to tote different brands regularly ;p BUT have 1? would I? Like you shared, i cant bring myself to when i can think of other more worthwhile uses for them (than satiating my so materialistic needs ;)) Another reason that has put halt to such earthly desires is the materials used to make such bags- calfskin, alligator/ snakes and what not bred specially to make these luxury items. hhhmmm i cannot live with such guilt. So prada’s high tech nylon bag remains in my wishlist- then again the durability and feel-good factor makes the price worthwhile- me makes excuses ;p Of course la, that will b e after taking of charity and more essential needs.

  4. I don’t know what an IT bag is (a bag for the latest iPad? netbook?) but I really hope that if I had that kind of money, I wouldn’t ever be tempted to get one. I haven’t bought myself a bag before (shocking!) because I’m been very blessed by loved ones with random sized bags (okay, some are a bit “aunty”). I have sewn a few for our own needs.

I would be in a different place, I think, if I was earning big bucks, immersed in the corporate world, surrounded by material temptations and peer pressure — only God’s grace and mercy would keep me steadfast, and a good steward of my money – just as He does now as a simple SAHM.

  5. I am in the corporate world (but I don’t earn big bucks ;-)) but in any case I don’t feel a need to own an IT bag. 🙂 Mostly because it doesn’t make sense to carry a bag which the value is more expensive than the contents within.
And at the end of the day, IT bag or any bag for that matter, is just…a bag. While an IT bag benefits only its wearer/user, a few thousand dollars can be used in many ways for much worthier causes – to bless a missionary or full-time worker’s ministry, to assist someone in real need, to buy something the whole family can enjoy together, to save for a rainy day, etc.

  6. sammi, you would be surprised how many chauffeur-cum-maids in my children’s schools carry such bags! ;p

  7. I’d say that for some of these rich, money is really not an issue for them. The cost of the bag is nothing compared to their wealth so they do not consider the affordability of it all. Many of us need to think twice to make such purchases because we are not moving in the level as they are. And who knows, maybe they do give to the poor but the poor we have always :). I think it is not a sin to buy expensive material things but it is a sin if we covet or envy what others have.

  8. What you would consider an “evil” spending of money could be to another just another “bag” because that person could have been born with a silver spoon in his mouth and the IT bag could have been another bag his family member bought him/her for a present.
So it is not the IT bag or any bag or whether one can afford it or whether we buy it after fulfilling our charity but rather whether it was a coverted item of envy that led to its possession. So to a “poor” person who covets a neighbour’s $20 slipper or dress, it is sin ??!!

    • Lol Belita! Yes coveteousness is a sin be it a $2 bag or a $20,000 one 🙂 Discontentment is something many of us struggle with isn’t it? 🙁
