Day 28 of #Write28Days Challenge
So we have finally reached the end of the #Write28Days Challenge. The 28 Tips for Managing Homeschooling and Housework series has come to an end. And I hoped you have learnt that you can homeschool and have a clean home.
You Can Homeschool and Have a Clean Home
The objective of participating in this challenge is not just to get me writing 28 posts on the blog but to answer an oft-asked question of how I manage homeschooling and housework without a live-in maid or a part-time helper.
I have a post How I Manage Housework with No Maid. But in this series, I go deeper and give more details of our routines and systems. And so, now you know my not-so-secret secret.
28 Tips for Managing Homeschooling and Housework
It is true. You can homeschool and have a clean house. But there is work involved. Homeschooling and housework do not happen by magic. Some of you are not able to put in the work and well…some don’t need to. And it is OK. It is after all your homeschool and your home.
I am not saying my way is the only way or the best way. There are many ways of running your homeschool and managing housework. The tips I gave are tips that have worked well for my family and me.
Let me wrap up the series with a few reminders.
Remembering Your Why
Always remember What is Your Why. Every time you want to throw in the towel and give up, go back to your why.
And also remember that we want to do all things heartily as unto the Lord and not men.
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24, NKJV
Routines and Systems Need Maintenance
One would like to think that once routines and systems are set in place it should just operate on auto-pilot. They will be BUT like machines, they will need maintenance and recalibration from time to time.
You will need to maintain the routines and systems by checking on our children’s progress. Our children, like us, are sinful creatures. They will push boundaries and test us. If they can get away with not following our routines and systems, they will. So we have to ensure that they stick to the routines and systems.
Routines and Schedules Need Recalibration
The routines and systems you set up today may not be applicable 6 months down the road, especially if you have very young children. The baby may be taking great morning and afternoon naps now but he will transition out of one of them in a few months. Your elementary level homeschool system works great when they are in elementary levels but not when they move on to high school.
We need to be observant and willing to tweak both our routines and systems. Insisting on a routine or system that no longer works is unproductive.
Make It Work For You
It is easy to look at fellow homeschooling moms and envy their lot in life resulting in us feeling miserable and discontented.
But if homeschooling is what the Lord has called you to, then homeschooling is what the Lord has called you to. Even if your lot does not look like that homeschooling family’s.
Whatever your circumstance is, make it work for you. If your husband travels a lot and you are left holding the fort a lot, then set up routines and systems that work for you in this situation. Stop envying the mom who has a husband who is very hands-on and is able to even teach a few subjects in their homeschool. We don’t know what struggles they may have. And trust me, all of us have struggles in our homeschool.
Make our circumstances work for us. If you are at a loss, look to the Lord for wisdom. He will direct your paths, send people your way, and open doors.
And so, this is it.
I hope I have given you encouragement that you can homeschool and have a clean home. And that you have learnt something or that I have at least caused you to go “hmmm… that is a possibility” as you have read all 28 tips.
